There’s something magical about celebrating the Summer Solstice — the longest day of the year — with a community that cares deeply about the environment. That’s exactly what I experienced once again at the 7th Annual TreeFolks Summer Solstice Party, hosted by TreeFolks and TF Young Professionals in the heart of downtown Austin.
Held at Hold Out Brewing & Better Half Coffee & Cocktails, this year’s event felt like a true celebration of trees, togetherness, and the power of joyful activism. I’ve attended this event several years in a row now, and it’s become one of my favorite annual traditions. Beyond the games and music, what keeps me coming back is the sense of community — a reminder that environmentalism can (and should) be fun, welcoming, and rooted in celebration.

Nature Meets Playfulness
From the moment I arrived, it was clear the organizers had pulled out all the stops this year. There was a nature/leaf petting zoo that delighted both kids and adults, tree ID walks for budding arborists, and a whole lineup of tree-themed games like Acorn Pong and Tree Code Names that brought out everyone’s inner nature nerd.
In one corner, a live band played acoustic music, and in another, a crowd gathered around the tarot reading station, sparking deep conversation and new friendships. A crowd favorite was the dancing around the maypole — a whimsical, energetic tradition that added just the right touch of ritual to mark the solstice.
One of the most creative additions this year was the nature-themed Dungeons & Dragons campaign — a one-hour, mini-adventure that invited players into a fantasy world inspired by the natural ecosystems we’re trying to protect. It was refreshing to see such a playful, cross-genre way of engaging folks with environmental themes.

Rooted in Purpose
While it was easy to get swept up in the festivities, the heart of the event was TreeFolks’ mission: to plant and care for trees in Central Texas. The organization set out to raise funds during the evening, with select event menu sales from the venue going directly to support tree planting. It’s an innovative, hyper-local model for fundraising — one that merges community gathering with tangible impact.
It’s always impressive how TreeFolks strikes a balance between fun and education. Their presence in Austin goes far beyond tree planting; they’re a catalyst for climate resilience, neighborhood beautification, and community empowerment. Events like this help draw new people into that mission — volunteers, donors, advocates, and future leaders.

Why Events Like This Matter
As someone who’s worked in communications and outreach across environmental sectors, I can’t stress enough how important it is to offer entry points like this. Not everyone will sign up for a weekend tree planting or a city council hearing — but they will come to a summer party with games, music, and good vibes.
These types of events build momentum. They plant the seeds for future involvement, inspire deeper conversations about climate and conservation, and remind us that we don’t have to go it alone. There’s a whole community out here that’s energized, collaborative, and ready to create change — and TreeFolks provides the space for that energy to grow.
If you’ve never been to a TreeFolks event, I encourage you to check one out — whether it’s a tree planting, educational workshop, or a seasonal celebration like this one. It’s one of the most rewarding ways to connect with people who share your values and passion for sustainability.
