I recently had the incredible opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving in Costa Rica, embarking on a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, thrilling adventures, and memorable experiences. Here’s a glimpse into my Costa Rican Thanksgiving adventure:
Thanksgiving Flight to Liberia
We kicked off our adventure with a Thanksgiving flight to Liberia, Costa Rica, on the west coast. Our destination: the beautiful town of Coco. Upon arrival, we indulged in a local food buffet at El Jardín, a central tourist hub, marking the beginning of our holiday getaway.
Arrival in Coco and Beachside Bliss
Arriving after sunset in Coco, we initially found ourselves slightly lost, but the sound of the ocean from our villa reassured us of our serene surroundings. The next morning greeted us with a spectacular view of the ocean, setting the stage for a day of exploration and relaxation.
Exploring Coco and Celebrating Richard’s Birthday
Our first day was spent casually exploring the charming Town of Coco. We celebrated Richard’s birthday amid the vibrant local culture, enjoying the community’s black beach and pool before heading to a nearby expat restaurant and bar for sunset, accompanied by a lively 60s-80s music cover band.
Leisurely Day of Exploration and Snorkeling
The following day was another leisurely exploration of Coco, strolling along the boardwalk, souvenir shopping in downtown, and befriending the local porch birds with granola treats. We also indulged in snorkeling, pool time, and a delicious meal at the villa’s restaurant, soaking in the tropical ambiance.
Adventurous Day at a Local Experience Resort
Our third day was packed with adrenaline-pumping adventures at a local experience resort. From riding trail horses and navigating class 3 jungle river rapids in tubes to soaring through the canopy on exhilarating ziplines, we embraced every moment. The day concluded with rejuvenating mud baths, volcanic springs, and refreshing river dips—a true immersion into Costa Rica’s natural wonders.
Mountain Escapade and Rainforest Exploration
On the fourth day, we ventured into the Costa Rican mountains for a waterfall photoshoot and explored a coffee, cocoa, and sugar cane plantation for a tasting experience. In the afternoon, we embarked on a wildlife tour, encountering sloths, poisonous frogs, and even a viper in their natural habitat. Our rainforest journey continued with a botanic tour across canopy suspension bridges, concluding with a visit to a local restaurant and butterfly sanctuary.
Reflecting on a Remarkable Journey
My Thanksgiving in Costa Rica was a journey of discovery, adventure, and cultural immersion. From the coastal charms of Coco to the rugged beauty of the rainforest, each day brought new experiences and unforgettable memories. I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes and wildlife, and I look forward to future adventures that await.
Thank you for joining me on this exhilarating journey. Stay tuned for more updates and stories from my travels and adventures!
Best regards,
Taylor Scott Nelson
